Awww, Cornwall

The main road between Falmouth and Penryn ground to a complete halt earlier, as one man slowly ushered some ducks across the tarmac, up onto the safety of the path. A whole line of traffic waiting patiently behind him, queued back to the roundabout and no-one beeped.

That happens in my home town too, except for the time some utter bastard ran over the entire duck family. That evil bastard made the local news.

In London somebody would have stolen the ducks, got them hooked on crack* and then put them out on the street to work for their next hit.

*Or possibly 'quack' which is even more addictive.

Although in london, the ducks would probably have been armed, so it would have balanced out.

In Daily Mail land, hordes of Poles would have eaten them, roasted over a fire made with ALL of Britain's £50 notes.

Do Ducks have the right of way over cars? They could cause havoc during the tourist season.

They certainly have right of way over tourists.

To my eternal horror I once ran over a baby duck crossing the road, mainly because I was concentrating on why the car in front and the one coming towards me both appeared to be doing a suicidal slalom at 50mph.

My kids are currently learning to drive and (I checked!) the highway code says you have to run over them rather than brake, but that's not much comfort.

The cornish method is much better.

See, that's the thing about the country: You've got to keep your speed down so you have a chance to react to sudden ducks, or hedgehogs, or badgers, or cyclists.

Bit of a Devon thing too, it would appear:

On the train from Plymouth to London the other week - forced to stop because there were some cygnets who'd strayed onto the track, and were too small to get out! The driver was trying to get them out, but kept getting attacked by the mother, who didn't want him getting too close! He then proceeded to repeat the tale of his heroics constantly for the rest of the journey.
